Chris Potter prezentuje nowy, akustyczny kwartet, który w naturalny sposób łączy melodyczne rapsodie z mocną, zdecydowaną rytmiką. Grupa złożona jest z wyśmienitych muzyków, dobrze znanych fanom nagrań spod znaku ECM: pianisty Davida Virellesa, basisty Joe’go Martina oraz perkusisty Marcusa Gilmore’a.„The Dreamer Is the Dream” to trzeci album, który Potter nagrał dla ECM jako lider. Artysta gra tu na saksofonie tenorowym – flagowym instrumencie, który uczynił go jednym z najbardziej podziwianych muzyków pokolenia (otwierający album „Heart in Hand”, czy „Yasodhara”), a także saksofonie sopranowym („Memory and Desire”) oraz klarnecie basowym (utwór tytułowy). Według magazynu The New Yorker, „Potter jest artystą, którego wspaniała technika zawsze służy muzyce, nigdy samej sobie.
