"Zamiast gadać, śpiewają. Ba, czasami nawet śpiewają i gadają, i do tego jeszcze tańczą. Soliści, chór, balet. A orkiestra gra swoje. Nie ma nic bardziej nienaturalnego i sztucznego od takiej konwencji porozumiewania się. A jednak odkąd Jacopo Peri wystawił we Florencji, ponad 400 lat temu, swe pierwsze (nazywane dzisiaj operą) utwory, gatunek ten nie przestaje nas fascynować.Niby nic tu nie jest na serio… Ale przecież wszystko mogło się wydarzyć naprawdę. A może jednak się wydarzyło? Mężczyzna przebrany za kobietę, kobieta za mężczyznę. Żona nie poznaje męża, mąż żony. Kochanka woli umrzeć, niż zdradzić niewiernego wybranka. Kochanek owija sobie wokół palca kolejne ofiary po to, by je później uśmiercić. Tajemniczy eliksir przywraca dawno zwietrzałą miłość. Cudem odnalezione rodzeństwo krzyżuje losy rodziny i państwa. Monarcha idealny staje się nędznikiem, krwawy władca przechodzi zaś nagłą przemianę. Zmarła powraca do życia, nim jednak zdąży się nim nacieszyć, znika ponownie… Takich historii można by mnożyć bez liku. W każdej z nich jest jednak coś, co ożywia scenę. Coś bliskiego, prawdziwego, co sami przeżyliśmy albo o czym… nie przestajemy marzyć.Opera w swej historii przeszła niejedną metamorfozę. Wymyślona jako nawiązująca do antycznych spektakli przyjemność dla elit stała się powszechną rozrywką: arystokracji, mieszczaństwa, niższych sfer. To w teatrach operowych dobijano interesów, knuto intrygi, zdradzano, urządzano potajemne schadzki, a przy okazji… słuchano muzyki. Opera była centrum życia towarzyskiego. Kto spodobał się na scenie, miał zapewnioną sławę i pieniądze. Jedno zaś zdanie monarchy – w stylu:  "za dużo nut, panie Mozart" (po premierze Uprowadzenia z seraju) – mogło zdecydować o przyszłości wystawianego dzieła, a nawet kompozytora. W dobie przedtelewizyjnej celebrytą był ten, kto dyktował warunki w operze.Dziś na operę się chadza (choć nie za często), o operze się dyskutuje (zawsze i wszędzie), opery się słucha z płyt (ale bez przesady). Tematy z Carmen, Wesela Figara, Rigoletta, Don Giovanniego znamy na pamięć, gwiżdżemy pod nosem, bo to piękne, powiedzielibyśmy dzisiaj, piosenki. Opera jest dla każdego, choć nie każdy w równym stopniu z niej  "korzysta".Wzrusza i nudzi, zachwyca i bulwersuje, wprowadza w błogi nastrój i okropnie irytuje.
