Baskijskie korzenie Ravela (ze strony matki) oraz szwajcarskie (ze strony ojca), stworzyły mieszankę precyzji i temperamentu, które w połączeniu wykreowały unikatowy styl artysty. W kraju niedoceniany, szczególnie entuzjastycznie przyjmowany w Ameryce. Wręcz pochłaniał amerykański jazz, co później przekłada się na skomponowane przez niego dwa koncerty. Będąc w Ameryce spotkał się także z Gershwinem. Istnieje anegdota, która mówi, że sam Gershwin chciał pobierać nauki u Ravela, na co francuski kompozytor odpowiedział: "Dlaczego chce Pan być czwartorzędnym Ravelem, będąc już pierwszorzędnym Gershwinem?". Szwajcarskie fortepianowe trio VEIN, czyli zespół w składzie Michael Arbenz na fortepianie, Thomas Lahns na kontrabasie i Florian Arbenz za perkusją, wydają się być predestynowani do jazzowej szarży na ravelowskich kompozycjach. Wielokrotnie już pokazali, że nieobce są im muzyczne zabawy rozmaitymi nastrojami i brzmieniami – od barowej rozrywki, przez zaangażowaną, poważną grę po ulotne, refleksyjne tony. Płyta "Jazz Talks", nagrana z udziałem Dave'a Liebmana jest tego najlepszym przykładem. Tym razem zaprosili angielskiego saksofonistę Andy'ego Shepparda, współpracownika Gila Evansa, George'a Russella i Carli Bley. Bogactwo języka muzycznego Ravela, w zderzeniu z wysokim poziomem wykonania, doskonałą komunikację między muzykami i mnogością improwizacji sprawiają, że płytę "Vein plays Ravel" nie sposób wyciągnąć z odtwarzacza. Gdy dodamy do tego charakterystyczne delikatne i ciepłe brzmienia saksofonu Andy'ego Shepparda otrzymamy płytę wybitną, o umiejętnie zbalansowanej dramaturgii.
