Maurice Ravel’s mature works for violin and piano have established a central place in the core recital repertoire and are considered among the most popular of the genre. These diverse works acknowledge the influences of a range of musical styles from jazz to Impressionism and fuse the tonal colours of Debussy with the lyricism of Franck. The posthumously published one-movement Violin Sonata, written by Ravel as a student, is a lyrical precursor to the composer’s stunning Violin Sonata in G major with its unique character and adoption of the ‘blues’ idiom. The spontaneity, tonal colours and exotic soundscapes in Ravel’s violin music call for immense skill in interpretation, and passages in the frenzied Tzigane test the limits of the performers’ virtuosity. Violinist Alina Ibragmiova rises to these challenges with extraordinary verve. Recent winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s prestigious ‘Young Artist of the Year’ award, she displays a vast expressive range and interpretative maturity. She is accompanied by pianist Cédric Tiberghien, who gives elegant and flawless performances and relishes Ravel’s iridescent piano parts. The addition of Guillaume Lekeu’s masterwork, the extensive and engaging Violin Sonata, makes this major new release a chamber disc to treasure.

Following a series of highly acclaimed recordings dedicated to individual composers, Yevgeny Sudbin has combined works by Liszt, Ravel and Saint-Saëns into a recital with the three-stranded theme Love, Delirium and Death. First to make its presence felt is death, in Funérailles, Liszt’s grandiose elegy for his Hungarian countrymen who died in the 1849 uprising against Habsburg Rule. It reappears in Ravel’s depiction of a hanging – Le Gibet (The Gallows) from the triptych Gaspard de la Nuit – and closes the programme in Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre in which Death personified provides the music for a morbid ballet of corpses, playing a fiddle and tapping his foot on a tombstone. Love enters the programme with the Petrarch Sonnets, originally song settings by Liszt of three of the many poems in which Petrarca immortalized Laura, the object of his life-long but unrequited passion, and later reworked for piano solo by the composer. A similarly hopeless attraction is described in Ravel’s Ondine – the tale of a water nymph tempting a mortal to join her in the depths of the lake. Delirium, finally, is present throughout the disc – most manifestly in the nightmarish portrait of the goblin Scarbo, but also as an essential ingredient in many of the other works. The programme thus poses a huge challenge for the performer in terms of transmitting a wealth of super-charged emotions and images while simultaneously negotiating immense technical demands – a worthy task for Sudbin, whose Scriabin interpretations were described in BBC Music Magazine as being ‘as terrifyingly changeable and emotionally all-engulfing as the music itself’, while his Rachmaninov disc to the reviewer in Piano Magazine revealed ‘a musical dramatist of exceptional acumen and sophistication; a poet who moves seamlessly between unbridled rhetoric and extreme intimacy; a stylist who catches the particular spirit of everything he plays…

Francuski mezzosopran, Nora Gubish, wraz z pianistą (i jednocześnie mężem) Alainem Altinoglu, prezentują kompozycje Maurice’a Ravela, w których melodia jest czynnikiem najważniejszym.Nora Gubish ma do Ravela stosunek niezwykły. Jeden z jej przodków, Ricardo Viñes, był jednym z najbliższych przyjaciół kompozytora. Jako pianiście Ravel powierzył mu m.in. premierowe wykonanie Gaspar de la Nuit.Pieśni prezentowane na najnowszej płycie Nory Gubish powstały w latach 1903-1927 i prezentują różne etapy w podejściu Ravela do twórczości wokalnej. Ich teksty odzwierciedlają literackie fascynacje kompozytora, jak i cały szacunek, jakim Ravel darzył literaturę.Podejście Ravela do pieśni ewoluowało na przestrzeni lat. Nie tylko postrzeganie przez niego formy i jej odmian, lecz także sama koncepcja głosu jako środka wydobycia dźwięku w toku lat ulegała redefinicji. Ravel skomponował ponad czterdzieści utworów z udziałem głosu ludzkiego (m.in. cztery cykle opracowań melodii ludowych, utwory chóralne, kilka kantat), odwołując się do wielu różnych form i gatunków muzycznych.Zarejestrowany na tej płycie zbiór kompozycji przez złośliwych określany bywa czasem jako niemożliwy do sklasyfikowania. Tak różnorodny to fragment twórczości: jest w nim i rys eklektyzmu, i ilustracja dźwiękowa wiersza Paula Verlaina, a także zharmonizowana melodia żydowska. Ricardo Viñes uczestniczył w fascynacjach literackich Ravela równie mocno. Przyjaciele na co dzień, wiele godzin potrafili rozmawiać o literaturze, wymieniać się książkami, współdzielili też zachwyty nad twórczością wybranych pisarzy. Podzielali fascynację pisarstwem Edgara Alana Poe, a następnie Baudelaira, Huysmansa i Mallarmego.Styl zawartych na płycie utworów zmieniał się z każdą następną kompozycją. Refleksja nad prozodią, możliwościami głosu ludzkiego, wymogami odpowiedniej artykulacji głosek wywierały za każdym razem wpływ na pisane aktualnie przez Ravela pieśni.Artyści, oboje urodzeni w latach 70., spotkali się po raz pierwszy podczas studiów w konserwatorium w Saint-Maur. Obydwoje studiowali grę na fortepianie, jednak Nora zdecydowała się także na doskonalenie głosu w klasie Christiane Eda-Pierre. Po niedługim czasie Alain został jej akompaniatorem. Wspólnie wygrali szereg konkursów, zdobyli kilka najwyższych nagród. Gubish zadebiutowała w operze w 1995 roku rolą Carmen w przedstawieniach w Berlinie, Paryżu i Zurichu. Od tamtej pory śpiewa w kompozycjach Monteverdiego, Vivaldiego, Mozarta, Rossiniego, Berlioza, Masseneta, Verdiego, Wagnera i Brittena. Występowała z takimi orkiestrami jak New York Philharmonic, Wiener Philharmoniker, Staatskapelle Dresden, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris czy Orchestre National de France. Od 2001 roku Alain występuje także jako dyrygent.
