9 marca 1997 roku w Los Angeles po imprezie promującej nowy album, Notorious Big wyjeżdżając z budynku czarnym Chevroletem Tahoe zatrzymał się na skrzyżowaniu Beverly Hills i ulicy Wilshire. Po chwili podjechał czarny sedan, z którego oddano 7 strzałów. Do dnia dzisiejszego nie została wyjaśniona sprawa zabójstwa Notoriousa. Jedna z hipotez mówi, że mogła to być zemsta za śmierć Tupac Shakura. Inna mówi, że mógł mieć z tym związek Puff Diddy, któremu jego śmierć pomogła w wypromowaniu się w roli czołowego rapera. Materiał z "Ready To Die" został nagrany w 1994 roku. Zawiera on 19 doskonałych hip hopowych utworów.
