The banning of opera performances during Lent in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Rome meant that composershad to turn their attention to biblical subjects. However there is no sense that either composer or librettist felt at alllimited in their subject matter, judging from the extraordinarily inventive oratorios that were produced during this time.Scarlatti’s work tells the dramatic story of David and Goliath. Whilst the biblical account relays the story in a fewsentences, the anonymous librettist of Davidis pugna et victoria expands upon these to create an extensive libretto, withthe characters fully developed and explored. Scarlatti’s musical response to the libretto demonstrates his gift forcharacterization, which acts as a commentary on the unfolding narrative. Performances of thrilling dynamism andinstinctive style from Academia Montis Regalis make the strongest possible case for this work.
Debiutująca w chicagowskich klubach na początku lat 50 młoda Abbey Lincoln musiała wywierać wielkie wrażenie skoro w dość szybkim czasie trafiła pod skrzydła popularnego wtedy Benny Cartera. Koncertowała wtedy też z muzykami bopowymi, jak Thelonious Monk, Mal Waldron i Max Roach.Jednak właśnie współpraca z Bennym Carterem sprawiła, że z nieznanej nikomu Gaby Woolridge, bo takie jest jej prawdziwe imię i nazwisko została uwielbianą i cenioną Abbey Lincoln.Wydana właśnie płyta "Affair: A Story Of A Girl in Love" zawiera cały materiał z winylowej płyty "Abbey Lincoln's Affair...a Story of a Girl in Love" wydanej w 1956 r. przez wytwórnię Liberty jak też utwory z singli wydawanych przez tę samą wytwórnię.Dodatkowo wydawnictwo wzbogacone zostało o dwa utwory koncertowe zarejestrowane w 1958 podczas Bobby Troup Stars of Jazz TV-Show w Los Angeles. Oba utwory nie były nigdy dotąd wydane!Abbey Lincoln od początku swojej kariery nie ulegała modom, zawsze stawiała na autentyzm, sama najlepiej scharakteryzowała swój styl: "(...)Wydaje mi się, że niewiele zmieniło się w moim śpiewie. Wszyscy sądzą, że śpiewam, tworzę jazz - a to tylko forma przekazania prostej opowieści zawartej w jazzowej piosence. A muzyka żyje dopiero wraz ze śpiewem, tekstem, emocją tworzenia".
