The voice of the countertenor Franz Vitzthum fascinates with its lightness and clarity: its almost “celestial” quality appears completely free of all ballast. How appropriate therefore is the programme of this new CD: the yearning for eternal life in which the troubles of mortal existence have been thrown off was a central theme of the German Baroque period.  Franz Vitzthum has selected cantatas and songs by a series of composers including Erlebach, Hildebrand, Böhm and Krieger whose compositions have for the most part been recorded on CD for the first time. The highlight rounding off this programme is the cantata "Ich fürchte keinen Tod auf Erden” [I do not fear death on earth] by Johann Augustin Kobelius (1674-1731) which is the only work by this composer to have been preserved. Kobelius was a fellow competitor of the young Johann Sebastian Bach for an organ post in the St. Jacob’s church in Sangerhausen – and here Bach lost out on the only occasion throughout his entire career! The fact that Kobelius must have deserved the post is borne out by the quality of his cantata which is presented to the public for the first time as a small sensation.

The outstanding British cellist Jamie Walton returns to disc on Signum, accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Alexander Briger. This disc includes William Walton's 1975 revision to the final movement of the cello concerto, which has never before been recorded or publically performed (as well as a performance of the original final movement).   This disc completes an Anglo-Russian trilogy of recordings by Jamie with this orchestra and conductor, proceed by pairings of Elgar & Myaskovsky (Cello Concertos - SIGCD116), and Britten & Shostakovich (Cello Symphony & Cello Concerto No.2 - SIGCD137). Both discs were released to great critical acclaim: "The elegiac quality in the work very much suits Jamie Walton's style, with his sweet, smooth cello tone, but he is also capable of powerfully attacking the vigorous writing … A most valuable and enjoyable disc, adding impressively to the series Jamie Walton has recorded for Signum" The Gramophone "Walton's revision may be only a couple of dozen bars long, but it does produce a weightier, more dramatic end to the work. It's fascinating to hear it, especially as the performance itself is of the highest quality. Walton's sound is superbly suited to this work" International Record Review  "Jamie Walton's performances of the two great 20th century cello concertos will probably be the only ones you will ever want … The sound quality has high impact and infinite detail." The performers on this recording of popular Bach works are the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra and its principals (as the soloists). According to “Gramophone” the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is the best orchestra in the world. In other words: better quality than this you won’t find.

Although Rubinstein did not play many works by Rachmaninov, he made four recordings of the Piano Concerto No. 2. If, in this May 1946 recording, Rubinstein’s adherence to the text is not always completely accurate, his performance is full of exhilaration and panache with fast tempos and a climax judged to have any audience jumping to its feet. The 1947 recording of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is remarkable, even today, for the high quality of the sound, described as ‘Stunning! The recording is almost too vivid’, by a critic in 1948. The only solo work of Rachmaninov that Rubinstein committed to disc was the famous Prelude in C sharp minor Op. 3 No. 2 which he recorded twice.
