The outstanding British cellist Jamie Walton returns to disc on Signum, accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Alexander Briger. This disc includes William Walton's 1975 revision to the final movement of the cello concerto, which has never before been recorded or publically performed (as well as a performance of the original final movement). This disc completes an Anglo-Russian trilogy of recordings by Jamie with this orchestra and conductor, proceed by pairings of Elgar & Myaskovsky (Cello Concertos - SIGCD116), and Britten & Shostakovich (Cello Symphony & Cello Concerto No.2 - SIGCD137). Both discs were released to great critical acclaim: "The elegiac quality in the work very much suits Jamie Walton's style, with his sweet, smooth cello tone, but he is also capable of powerfully attacking the vigorous writing … A most valuable and enjoyable disc, adding impressively to the series Jamie Walton has recorded for Signum" The Gramophone "Walton's revision may be only a couple of dozen bars long, but it does produce a weightier, more dramatic end to the work. It's fascinating to hear it, especially as the performance itself is of the highest quality. Walton's sound is superbly suited to this work" International Record Review "Jamie Walton's performances of the two great 20th century cello concertos will probably be the only ones you will ever want … The sound quality has high impact and infinite detail."
