The Bach Collegium Japan was founded by Masaaki Suzuki 20 years ago, in 1990, and the team’s cycle of Bach’s Cantatas was launched five years later, in November 1995. Now, 46 volumes and fifteen years later, the series has entered the final stretch but is still going as strong as ever. Reviews of recent volumes speak for themselves – ‘With Suzuki you can hear Bach's heart beat...’ the reviewer in International Record Review wrote in regards to Volume 40, while Volume 43 caused the critic in Fanfare to rhapsodize: ‘a set for the ages, not only performed with consummate style, historical considerations, and musical substance, but with a feeling for these seminal religious works that transcends the merely mechanical presentation that we so often - too often - hear.’ There is certainly nothing mechanical about the present performances, of three works which in emotional content range from the joyful vitality of the Advent cantata BWV36 to the meditations upon death and the leave-taking of this world which permeate BWV27. As always the opening choruses are of particular interest, for instance that of Cantata BWV47, a striking example of Bach’s skills in illustrating a text in music but also a highly complex composition in which the interplay between choir and orchestra is beautifully balanced. The soloists also have their share of fine moments on this instalment. Hana Blažíková, dubbed ‘an ideal Bach soprano’ in International Record Review on account of her performance on the previous Cantata volume, performs the charming and playful aria ‘Auch mit gedämpften, schwachen Stimmen’ with solo violin, while Robin Blaze and Peter Kooij – both veterans of this series – each have received a true display piece in the form of the two arias of BWV27.

Bach Collegium Japan was first noticed internationally for undertaking the huge project of recording the complete church cantatas of J. S. Bach. Although the ensemble’s discography consists of predominately vocal works, the participating instrumentalists have attracted acclaim ever since the outset. On the present offering, it is Bach’s two great sets of orchestral works that form the programme and the choir of the BCJ is silent. Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki first recorded the Brandenburg Concertos in 2000, but now return to these great works. The new recording took place in the recently completed MUZA Kawasaki Hall, a venue that is highly suitable to an approach focussing on the chamber music qualities of this music. In four of the concertos Masaaki Suzuki has chosen to replace the traditional cello with the violoncello da spalla – a smaller instrument played horizontally on the shoulder or held against the breast. The instrument has already featured in the BCJ Cantata series, and opens for new possibilities in timbre, for instance in Concerto No. 6, where the violoncello da spalla blends particularly well with the two solo violas and the viola da gambas. Making a new recording also provided the opportunity to record these in many ways multidimensional works in 5.0 Surround Sound, releasing them as hybrid SACDs. This is also the format of the included recordings of the Orchestral Suites, originally released in 2005 to great and universal acclaim. The German website klassik.com called the 2-CD set ‘incredibly perfect Bach!’ and named it one of the reference recordings of these oft-recorded works, while the Financial Times (UK) listed it as one of the outstanding classical discs of 2005, remarking that "Suzuki's traversal of the Bach orchestral suites combine scholarship and style without compromising the music's expressiveness". In the Brandenburg Concertos and the Suites, Bach explored an Italian and a French genre respectively, and in his inimitable way transcended the boundaries of both. This attractive box at a very advantageous price combines both sets performed by one of the leading Baroque ensembles in high fidelity recordings – not to be missed!

Since they were founded in 1979 Harry Christophers and The Sixteen have recorded over 100 discs of choral music spanning 600 years. On this new collection, CORO presents a selection of their most celebrated recordings of music by composers from across Europe. This disc features music from over a dozen composers representing ten countries from Palestrina’s Assumpta Est Maria and Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir to excerpts from Poulenc’s Sept Répons des Ténèbrae and Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir. This disc provides a superb collection of works from some of Europe’s most celebrated composers and, alongside the first disc in this set, Great British Choral Works, is the perfect introduction to The Sixteen’s wonderful music.

The critically acclaimed concerts were given to mark the 50th anniversary of Martinu° ’s death in 1959. Martinu°’s six symphonies are a major contribution to 20th-century symphonic literature, and yet are still undervalued. Spanning the years before, during and after the Second World War, they capture the turmoil, hopes and fears of the composer and his homeland – a homeland that suffered unimaginable cruelties under the Nazis. At the end of the war, Martinu° was the only major Czech composer of his generation to have survived.Yet through the underlying currents of menace in the later works, the irrepressible Czech spirit survives, and the country’s folk music is never far from the surface in these powerful and sincere works. Johann Georg Reutter (1708-1772) worked under the Emperor Charles VI and Maria Theresa as a court composer in Vienna at the time of the greatest territorial expansion of the Habsburg Empire, and in an era when the music life of the court was at a high point. At an early age he gained an excellent reputation as the creator of oratorios and works of music drama, and, through the accumulation of numerous offi ces at court and at St. Stephen‘s Cathedral, he held at the end of his life a position of power like no other composer before him. With this CD the mezzo-soprano Olivia Vermeulen and the Ensemble Nuovo Aspetto present a fascinating overview of the work of this extraordinarily prolifi c composer, whose oeuvre has hardly appeared on disc until now. Olivia Vermeulen‘s voice has a warm and intimate timbre. The instrumental accompaniment of the arias on this recording gets its characteristic silvery tone through the psaltery - the extremely virtuoso „dulcimer“ was held in particularly high regard at the Viennese court in Reutter‘s time. In the recorded instrumental works Reutter displays a colourful and virtuoso relationship with the orchestra - not without reason Reutter exerted considerable infl uence on the young Haydn (whom he had brought to Vienna as a boy singer) and on W. A. Mozart

A fascinating collection of well-known and unusual Beethoven, including a world premiere recording of the Sonatine in the viola and cello arrangement, and an arrangement for viola and piano by William Primrose of the Theme and Variations from the Serenade for String Trio op.8. Maxim Rysanov and friends reveal the composer in light-hearted mood in the early works, and on the brink of his visionary late creative period in the fifth cello sonata.

2011/12 sees the 400th anniversary of the birth of one of the most important masters of the early German Baroque. Hammerschmidt‘s vocal works are known to the wider public today throught just a few pieces such as ‚Machet die Tore weit‘ and ‚Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt‘. His output encompasses a wide range of musical forms: concertos and cantats, motets and instrumental pieces, as well as ‚secular‘ vocal works on the most varied scorings.This CD is the fi rst of two releases from CARUS with ensemble Gli Scarlattisti which present Andreas Hammerschmidt‘s vocal works in a thematic and theologically-liturgically arranged sequence, and each work is juxtaposed with composition to a Latin text by his contemporary Johann Rosenmüller.

The oldest American Bach Choir, The Bach Choir of Bethlehem performs, on their first recording on the Analekta label, works celebrating the Creator by J.S. Bach and Vivaldi. Such renowned singers as Daniel Taylor, Daniel Lichti and Benjamin Butterfield are joining conductor Greg Funfgeld on this glorious recording.This recording could have been titled "Glorious Glorias,” since the first of these three works ends with the Gloria Patri, the second is a setting of the Gloria in excelsis Deo, and the third conjoins the Gloria in excelsis Deo with the Gloria Patri.
