Philipp Heinrich Erlebach is one of those composers who was utterly forgotten by history. Originally from East Frisia, he arrived at the court of Rudolstadt in Thuringia at the age of 24 to serve as music director, remaining there for the rest of his life. This was why he was forgotten: during the course of history, the lustre of the court faded and the collection of over 2500 works by himself and others, amassed by Erlebach during the course of his life, was destroyed by fire. Thus this once significant composer "from the Province" faded from memory.  Only a few works by Erlebach have survived, but these give an indication of what artistic treasures have most likely been lost. With the present CD, the Capricornus Consort of Basel is making a first attempt to introduce a representative crosssection of those works of Erlebach that are still within grasp. They are strongly influenced by the French style, as is particularly evident in the two grand OvertureSuites which bear the mark of Lully. As a contrast, the Ensemble performs three secular arias sung by countertenor Franz Vitzthum and soprano Miriam Feuersinger. In the concluding duet, the two voices attain such a fantastic harmony that one can hardly distinguish precisely which of them is singing.

This boxed set edition includes previously unreleased recordings and an ample booklet (88 pages) with full liner notes in English, French and German. Released on five separate discs, Noriko Ogawa’s traversal of the solo piano music of Claude Debussy has been receiving consistent praise in the international music press, with distinctions such as Gramophone Editor’s Choice (twice); a top recommendation (‘10/10/10’) on the German website Klassik Heute, ‘Recording of the Month’ on MusicWeb International.com and ‘CD of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3 CD Review. Along with general acclaim for Noriko Ogawa’s approach to the music (‘a Debussy interpreter of exceptional class’ – International Record Review; ‘a most elegant, scrupulously sensitive interpreter’ – Gramophone), performances of individual works and sets of works have been singled out. In BBC Music Magazine Ogawa’s Images and Children's Corner were named benchmark recordings, while Classica-Répertoire placed the second book of Préludes and the set of Études among the most important and convincing versions in the discography. Less well-known works have also been cited, such as the piano score of the children’s ballet Boîte à joujoux (‘A superlative performance… worth the price of the disc alone’ – Gramophone) and Debussy’s own transcription for solo piano of Six Èpigraphes antiques (‘the pianist creates a poetic atmosphere which leaves the listener breathless’ – Classica-Répertoire). The original five discs have now been brought together as a boxed set with the addition of a sixth CD, containing Noriko Ogawa’s previously unreleased recordings of Debussy’s only work for piano and orchestra, the Fantaisie pour piano et orchestre from 1890, and five school fugues, written as part of Debussy’s training at the Paris Conservatoire, and transcribed from the original manuscripts for this occasion.

Jean Sibelius' emergence as a composer coincided with the rapid development of choral singing in Finland, at a time when new choirs were being established all over the country. The importance of the genre may be measured by the fact that one of Sibelius's most deeply felt pieces for mixed choir, Män från slätten och havet (Men from Land and Sea), received its first performance by a choir of gargantuan proportions – around 1,300 singers – gathered at a festival in the city of Vaasa in 1912. Choral music also forms an important part of Sibelius' production: besides the present collection of more than 7 hours of music for choir a cappella and with piano or organ accompaniment, there are a large number of orchestral works involving choir. (These are included in volume 3, 'Voice and Orchestra', of this edition.) As a consequence of the division in Finland between Finnish- and Swedish-speakers, Sibelius set texts in both languages, and while a large majority of his solo songs use Swedish texts, in the choral music we find a much larger proportion of settings in Finnish - often, if far from always, of texts from Kalevala, the national epic poem, or its lyric counterpart Kanteletar. Like previous volumes in the SIBELIUS EDITION, the present collection includes not only the published works, but also unpublished pieces, revisions and early versions. Many of these are here recorded for the first time, such as the version with piano of the two choral movements of Kullervo and the reconstruction of the Cantata for the University Graduation Ceremonies of 1897. Other rarities, quite unexpected for those whose knowledge of Sibelius is mainly restricted to his symphonic output, are the two brief arrangements of 'Italian Folk Songs', and the collection of Chorales for mixed choir written during the student years in Helsinki and in Berlin. Performing this wealth of music are some of Finland's finest choirs, with the YL Male Voice Choir and Akademiska Sångföreningen sharing the pieces for male choir, with contributions from their Swedish colleagues in Orphei Drängar. The music for mixed choir is championed by the Dominante and the Jubilate choirs, while most of the piano accompaniments are signed Folke Gräsbeck, whose recordings of Sibelius' complete music for solo piano have just been released.

In the autumn of 2010 CORO will release a brand new recording of Mozart’s Mass in C minor featuring Harry Christophers in his role as Artistic Director and conductor of the Handel and Haydn Society - America’s oldest continuously performing orchestra and chorus - with celebrated soloists, including Gillian Keith. In September 2008 Harry Christophers was appointed Artistic Director of Boston’s internationally-acclaimed Handel and Haydn Society. Founded in 1815, the Society premiered key works by Handel, Bach and Haydn in America, has won a Grammy Award and also has a place in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. Harry has worked with the Society since 2006 and his inaugural concert as Artistic Director was in December 2009 with Handel’s Messiah. Mozart’s Mass in C minor is one of the best-known and most widely performed of the composer’s mass settings and is generally considered to be one of his greatest works and, as such, is often referred to as the ‘Great Mass’. Unlike many of his other works the Mass was not a commission and Mozart wrote it purely for his own pleasure. It is a remarkable union of musical vision and religious text and draws on Mozart’s skill for drama that made his operatic works such a phenomenal success. The Mass in C minor rightly justifies its illustrious place in the pantheon of sacred choral music.

Available in both standard CD and also multi-channel DSD hybrid SACD formats, this second volume of Hyperion’s project to record all of Monteverdi’s sacred music focuses on works to be found in the 1650 publication Messa a quattro voci e salmi. Here we find a glorious Mass-setting (one of only three to have survived complete – the 1597 Mass is recorded on volume 1), and the composer’s well crafted response to the epic Litany of Loreto. The third work here with full choir is the five-part Exultent caeli, a suitably joyous little work published in 1629. Distinguished soloists Carolyn Sampson, Rebecca Outram, Rogers Covey-Crump, Charles Daniels, James Gilchrist and Peter Harvey share out the remaining works: the duets Venite, siccientes, Ego dormio, Cantate Domino and O beatae viae, and the solo pieces Currite populi and Laudate Dominum (sung by Gilchrist and Harvey, respectively).R10 CLASSICA RÉPÉRTOIRE DU MOIS 'Sumptuous surround sound and full-blooded performances from Robert King and Co. combine to thrilling effect in the second release in their fabulous Monteverdi cycle' (Classic FM Magazine)'... there are joys here to melt icebergs ... I want Volume 3 immediately' (The Times)'Monteverdi is one of those composers who really does merit a complete recording of his output. The sacred works have been a little neglected, and this splendid new series, with its informed and intelligent booklet notes, is putting things right' (BBC Music Magazine) 'I'll say it straight out: the result is truly exciting! The music is magnificent, and so is the interpretation … The architecture of the programme is particularly remarkable, and the album is built on balance, variety, contrast' (Goldberg Early Music Magazine) 'Where this new disc really comes into its own is in the small-scale motets, where King's outstanding roster of soloists would be exceedingly difficult to better … The rarely performed motets alone should ensure the present disc its place in any Monteverdi collection, while John Whenham's notes prove as valuable an asset as those Michael Talbot provided for King's Vivaldi sacred music traversal' (Fanfare, USA) 'This is an absolutely crack team of soloists, all of whom are completely at home in Monteverdi's idiom. The tenors in particular luxuriate in the ornamental roulades ...'
