It was In 1909 that Serge Dighilev first presented the „Ballets Russes” In Monte-Carlo, with performances of The sumptuous Works of Mikhail Fokine, the company’s choreographer. In 1911, the company settled in Monaco, under the patronage of the Princess, and the Principality became its home  and playground, a creative laboratory in which a succession of exceptional works were conceived of and presented. This “Belle époque”, where risks were taken in equal proportion to the juxtaposition of artistic talents, ended with the beginnings of war in 1914.

Stravinsky’s collaboration with the violinist Samuel Dushkin was a great artistic success, generating new works for the repertoire as well as arrangements of some of the composer’s most tuneful and popular works. Of these arrangements, Dushkin wrote that Stravinsky seemed ‘to go back to the essence of the music and rewrite or recreate the music in the spirit of the new instrument’. Reviewing the current performers in The Independent, Bayan Northcott writes that ‘these are no ordinary transcriptions. In reducing items from The Firebird or The Fairy’s Kiss to the violin and piano medium, Stravinsky rethought and respaced their every chord’. In the performing partnership of Anthony Marwood and Thomas Adès, Hyperion has a combination that seems to reignite the original flames of inspiration, creation and re-creation.

Gwiazda Mystic Festival, fińska grupa Nightwish, prezentuje nowy album! Płyta nosi tytuł „Human.: II: Nature” i ukazuje się 10 kwietnia 2020 roku. Będzie to podwójny album, zawierający 9 utworów na pierwszej płycie i jedną długą, podzieloną na osiem podtytułów, kompozycję, która znajdzie się na dysku drugim. Lider zespołu, Tuomas Holopainen, powiedział kiedyś, że za każdym razem, gdy tworzy nową płytę, ma na celu uchwycenie w muzyce czegoś bardzo wyjątkowego. W 2020 roku z pewnością ponownie osiągnie swój cel. Materiał został zarejestrowany w okresie od sierpnia do października 2019 w Röskö, Petrax Studios i w Troykington, a także w Finnvox Studios przez Tero Kinnunena, Mikko Karmilę i Troya Donockleya. Miksem zajął się Mikko Karmila z Finnvox, wraz z Tuomasem Holopainenem i Tero Kinnunenem. Masteringu dokonał Mika Jussila w Finnvox. Kolejne ambitne dzieło w dyskografii Finów z całą pewnością nie zawiedzie fanów, którzy na albumie otrzymają wszystko to, za co kochają Nightwish. The arresting clarinet glissando at the start of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is probably the most famous opening in American music. It also serves as a symbol for an important current in 20th century music – that of merging popular genres and art music into something wholly new – and as such becomes even more significant through the fact that it wasn’t even in the score when the composer first started rehearsals with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, before the première in 1924: this particular feature, oozing of smoky jazz clubs, was arrived at in collaboration with the clarinettist of the orchestra. At the time, Gershwin was was a mere 25 years old, but already a celebrated jazz pianist and songsmith, with a string of hits to his name. Due to a lack of time, he entrusted the orchestration to Ferde Grofé, the regular arranger of Whiteman’s jazz band. The immediate success of the work created a demand for a version for symphony orchestra, however, and for a long time that was the one most usually heard in concert and on disc. On the present recording, Freddy Kempf and the conductor Andrew Litton – himself a noted soloist in Gershwin’s works for piano and orchestra – have opted for the original orchestration, allowing the musicians of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra to revel in the role of a classic American big band. Following the première of Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin was commissioned to write a ‘proper’ piano concerto. He did so the following year, this time providing his own orchestration. Also highly successful with its original audience, Concerto in F employed the rhythms, melodic structures and bluesy harmonies of popular music, but its form is resolutely classical. Also included on the disc are Gershwin’s two remaining works for piano and orchestra, the Second Rhapsody (here in his own, original orchestration) and the infectious Variations on ‘I Got Rhythm’. The performers on this disc have previously collaborated in a highly acclaimed recording of works by Prokofiev – a disc shortlisted for a Gramophone Award in 2010. The reviewer in International Record Review found it ‘an exciting performance, with soloist and conductor working as one’ with ‘wit as well as virtuosity in Kempf's playing’ – qualities that are in rich evidence in this new release too.

THE MINIATURE IN THE CYCLE In just 40 minutes, the cosmos was created. To be sure, here we are talking solely about a pianistic cosmos: yet it is one that still, more than 170 years after its creation, remains breath-taking and arouses many diverse emotions, including unlimited admiration. The oeuvre in question is Frédéric Chopin’s Preludes, Op. 28. He wrote these 24 pianistic miniatures between 1836 and 1839, modelling them on the Preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach. However, he did not retain their “prologue-type” character: on the contrary, the variety of the works is more an indication of a secondary meaning of this term, i.e. fantasizing. Among the greatest composers of the 19th century, Chopin is probably the only one to write more or less exclusively for “his” instrument, the piano. During a period of some 20 years, he composed almost 200 solo works. Not a huge output, compared to other extremely prolific composers of the day (whose names and works have now justifiably been forgotten). Chopin polished away at his compositions, until each one was defined by its own unmistakable personality. In order to classify the special distinctive features of his sound, one should probably not only emphasize the international character of his particular piano style, but also – and especially – point out the various compositional stages through which he went in his diverse roles of improviser, pianist, piano teacher and composer. Together, these blended into a highly potent mixture. German musicologists have generally tended to categorize Chopin rashly as a “salon composer”, and thus make it impossible to view his music without prejudice. However, although Chopin most certainly encountered audiences for his music in the salon, the quality of his works undoubtedly soars far above that environment. Thus the “Chopineske” is the successful synthesis of a musical world view, which combines the operatic sweetness of Bellini, the calculated effect of Rossini, the contrapuntal gravity of Bach, as well as the harmony of Wagner in a jaunty, daring and calculating fashion. The Preludes Op. 28 are monothematic and the nuclei of their motifs frequently comprise only one bar (at times, in fact, of only part of a bar), from which the works are then developed. The order of the 24 Preludes was determined (at a later date) according to the quint circle and the related minor keys. This brings up the question, especially for interpreters, of whether or not this is a cycle. Many pianists consciously select individual pieces from the opus: however, they tend to overlook the fact that this entire opus of Don Quichote-type works is dominated by an all-encompassing sense of drama, thanks to its contrast and expression. The pieces alternate continuously between triumph and despair, brilliance and darkness, excitement and composure. The Prelude Op. 45, dating from 1841, is light years away from Op. 28 as regards style of composition. It is an “overcast” and poetic masterpiece, a bitter-sweet anticipation of the late Intermezzi by Brahms, interrupted by agonizing and tormenting transitions, a kaleidoscopic cadenza, and a coda of well-nigh operatic drama and declamation. Robert Schumann wrote his Papillons, Op. 2 between 1829 and 1832. The cycle consists of 12 concise fantasy images, based on notes from his study books, in which he jotted down his musical ideas. The aphoristic Schmetterlinge (= butterflies) received an additional cachet thanks to the literary association with Jean Paul’s Die Flegeljahren (= the years of adolescence). The two final chapters of the novel are entitled “Larven-Tanz” (= dance of the masks) and “Brief – Nachtwandler – Traum” (= letter – sleepwalker – dream). Here, Schumann demonstrates to the listener his “new approach to the variation form”: thus he presents the individual miniatures (dance, ballroom, masks) as strongly contrasting, yet derives both motif and theme from a common source. The thematic material of the waltz in No. 1 determines the course of the remainder of the work, in which Schumann varies all elements and levels of the music, and as such subjects the character and development of the moods to a permanent transformation.
