C 804 101 AC 804 101 AMit der kompletten Ballett-Musik zum Feuervogel findet sich sowohl der jugendliche Avantgardist Strawinsky, auf dem Weg zum frühen Weltruhm, als auch der gereifte Endvierziger der Psalmensymphonie berücksichtigt – im reizvollen Kontrast dieser chamäleonartigen Wandlungen. Nelsons und das CBSO lassen aber keinen Moment lang Zweifel daran aufkommen, dass Strawinsky bereits als 27-Jähriger kompositorisch aus dem Vollen schöpfte: so zum Beispiel, was die Kühnheit und Pointiertheit der Rhythmik, die variantenreiche Harmonik und die einfallsreiche Melodik anbelangt, die beiden letzteren im Feuervogel freilich noch keineswegs antiromantisch. Wie meisterhaft außerdem die Instrumentation des Feuervogels ist, wird von Andris Nelsons und dem CBSO klanglich brillant aufgefächert. Die dramatische Situation und die Figuren sind akustisch durchgehend nachvollziehbar und mitreißend. Da lassen Streicher und Holzbläser in den Tänzen des Feuervogels die Funken springen und sprühen, um in den Episoden um Prinz und Prinzessin samtig dem Ohr zu schmeicheln; und die Blechbläser beschwören mit bedrohlich schnarrendem Klang die Welt des bösen Zauberers herauf, der bereits mit plastisch herausgearbeiteten Anklängen an das von Rimski-Korsakow angeführte „Mächtige Häuflein“ im Schlagwerk Einzug gehalten hat. Among requiems, the one composed by Johannes Brahms is unusual in more than one way. First of all, it was one of the first works with that title that didn’t employ the standard text, in Latin, of the Roman Catholic Mass for the dead. Brahms instead compiled his own text from the German Bible of Martin Luther, placing the focus on the living rather than on the dead, as demonstrated by the beginning of the work: ‘Blessed are those who bear pain: for they shall be comforted.’ The result is a work suffused with the glow of humanism, notably less concerned with sin and punishment than many other works in the same genre. Indeed, in connection with one of the first performances of the work, Brahms said regarding the title that he ‘would gladly give up the German and simply put human’. It is this work, then, that Valery Gergiev chose to perform at his final concerts as principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This memorable event – the finale of an era in the life of the conductor as well as in the history of the orchestra – was captured on film, and is now being released on DVD. For the performances, and recording, of this work, in which the choir plays a central role, the orchestra invited the renowned Swedish Radio Choir, as well as the soloists Solveig Kringelborn and Mariusz Kwiecień.

Pochodzący z Węgier wybitny kompozytor Franciszek Lehár, urodzony w 1870 roku w Komarnie, zmarł w 1948 w Bad Ischl (Austria). Artysta był twórcą operetek. Lehar był cenionym kompozytorem i muzykiem. Przyczynił się on niezaprzeczalnie do rozwoju oper i operetek, a jego muzyka zachwyca wachlarzem różnorodności muzycznych. Jego muzyka jest wyrafinowana a zarazem lekka, z dodatkiem szczypty ironii, złagodzonej nostalgicznymi nutami. Był to ostatni twórca operetki wiedeńskiej.
