Composer Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) was a man who was always perfectionistic about himself. The old master was in possession of two qualities which never abandoned him: the sharp and questioning attitude of the scientist and the unfathomable emotion of the artist. The head and the heart coming together in beautiful music!Giuseppe Tartini was a Legend in his lifetime, and one of the most influential figures in the golden age of the baroque era. Known as “Il maestro delle Nazioni” Tartini was, according to his contemporaries, a kind and affable man, and his respectable behaviour did not bear any trace of the intemperance he showed as a young man. It is of course possible that a mature man learns to keep his emotions under control, but in the case of a great artist one can say that he chose to wear a mask that hid all underlying passions.  Through the performance of violinist Luigi De Filippi on this debut cd, we can catch a glimpse of Tartini’s real expression, the intense and intelligent face of a man who, albeit not exactly orientated towards the future, all the same moved decidedly away from the baroque era. Although Tartini made some msitakes in his life as a young man, this made himto reflect upon himself and on music as well. He for instance delves into the “secret” of music, of its cathartic faculties, of what in music goes straight to the heart and what barely scratches the surface of emotions; he notices that folk music has an eloquence denied to learned music. Of the music of the folk, that he describes as “natural” music, he distills the essence, and employs the fundaments in his Sonatas and concertos.

This is the fifth and now final volume in our survey of orchestral works by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. Gramophone wrote of a previous volume in the series (CHSA 5106) that it ‘offers a broad view of Lutosławski’s creative profile, which the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Edward Gardner fleshes out with playing that is as polished as it is animated, and alert to the individuality of Lutosławski’s musical vocabulary and mode of expression’.Lutosławski wrote his Symphony No. 1 between 1941 and 1947, but interestingly it does not display any obvious signs of his trying to come to terms with the ordeal that befell his people. Quite the opposite, in fact. Lutosławski himself described the symphony as bright and cheerful, ‘because that was the idea of the composition, which was conceived in the period of independence before the war, but brought into being during the terrible wartime and in far from idyllic post-war years’. At the time, one Polish colleague went so far as to call it ‘fauvist’, so wild and vibrant did it appear to the audiences at its first performance in April 1948.Lutosławski was a meticulous collector of folk materials in the first half of the 1950s, but for him, Dance Preludes was a ‘farewell to folklore’, even though he privately still explored folk tunes for several more years. Here the orchestra and conductor are joined by the clarinettist Michael Collins, an exclusive Chandos artist.As his career developed in the more open environment that emerged after the ‘socialist-realist’ period, Lutosławski began to receive international recognition, and with the Partita (1984, orchestrated 1988), for violin and orchestra, he presented a newly relaxed, more melodic compositional style to the public. The soloist is the exclusive Chandos artist Tasmin Little.Chain 2 (1984 – 85) was premiered by Anne-Sophie Mutter on 31 January 1986 with Collegium Musicum, conducted by Paul Sacher to whom it was dedicated. On this recording Tasmin Little leads the orchestra through a succession of ideas, much as the soloist had done in the ‘Episodes’ movement of the Cello Concerto (recorded on CHSA 5106 with Paul Watkins).

W 2016 roku minęło 60 lat odkąd rozpoczęła się kariera sceniczna jednej z największych postaci rockabilly, Ronniego Hawkinsa. Dobry to powód, aby przypomnieć sobie fragment bogatego dorobku do dziś nagrywającego i występującego artysty, znanego jako "Rompin' Ronnie" albo "Mr. Dynamo".  Można to zrobić dość szybko i skutecznie dzięki pięciopłytowemu zestawowi z cyklu "Original Album Series". Znalazły się w nim płyty, jakie Ronnie nagrał między 1959 a 1971 rokiem, a konkretnie: debiutancka "Ronnie Hawkins", "Mr. Dynamo", "The Folk Ballads Of Ronnie Hawkins", "Ronnie Hawkins 1970" oraz "The Hawk". Warto wspomnieć, że Hawkins miał niemały udział w tym, że narodziła się grupa The Band, a także zespół towarzyszący Janis Joplin.

DVD z występami Boba Dylana z lat 63-65 jakie początkujący wówczas muzyk/wokalista dał słynnym wówczas Newport Folk Festival. Materiał wyreżyserowany przez zdobywcę Oscara Murray'a Lernera pokazuje pierwsze koncerty przyszłej legendy muzyki folk. W 1963 roku Dylan wydał właśnie Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan - swój pierwszy album i dopiero stawiał pierwsze kroki na muzycznej scenie. Rok później jego pozycję umocniło wydanie The Times They Are A-Changin’ a w 1965 sprawy nieco się... zelektryfikowały. Elektryczny koncert Dylana z 1965 roku wywołał nie lada kontrowersje: dwa lata wcześniej dał się poznać jako utalentowany tekściarz i kompozytor i wydawać by się mogło, że akustyczne brzmienie przylgnęło do niego na dobre. Kiedy publiczność w Newton usłyszała zupełnie nowe dźwięki, natychmiast przeszły one do historii i rozpoczął nowy etap w karierze słynnego barda.
