Linda Nicholson is one of the foremost keyboard players specialising in the performance of baroque, classical and early romantic music on instruments of the period. After studying at London University (B.Mus.) and the Royal College of Music (piano with Kendall Taylor, harpsichord with Ruth Dyson) she won the first two international competitions held for the fortepiano, namely the Concours International du Pianoforte in Paris and the Festival of Flanders Competition in Bruges. Since then she has gained an international reputation, performing in major festivals and concert series throughout Europe and the Far East. Her broad repertoire encompasses solo works, chamber music and concertos.   Linda is able to offer an unmatched combination of musical experience and historical knowledge of keyboard instruments. She has been fortunate in being in a position to create, together with her husband, one of the major European collections of keyboard instruments ranging from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Direct contact with original instruments by the best makers and in fine playing order has given Linda a unique insight into the particular characteristics and technical demands of each one: her performances are regularly praised not only for their musical integrity but for the beauty and variety of sounds which she is able to conjure out of the keyboard, whether it be harpsichord, clavichord or fortepiano. She uses these instruments, normally only accessible in museum collections, for concerts and recordings, so giving listeners the opportunity of experiencing directly the sound worlds of the great baroque and classical compose.

Sony Music prezentuje album wydany przy współpracy ze znanym dziennikarzem muzycznym Danielem Wyszogrodzkim, autorem popularnej książki „Ale Musicale!”, w której obszernie opisuje kultowe dzieła musicalowe. Płyta nawiązuje do książki wydanej przez wydawnictwo Marginesy w 2018 roku, a za dobór utworów jest odpowiedzialny sam Daniel Wyszogrodzki. Daniel Wyszogrodzki na temat albumu: „Zależało mi, żeby – podobnie jak w książce – ukazać stylistyczną różnorodność musicalu, nie ma bowiem gatunku teatralnego bardziej otwartego na inspiracje i wpływy, bardziej eklektycznego. W musicalu wszystko jest możliwe: od operetki („My Fair Lady”) do swingu („42 Street”), od modern jazzu („West Side Story”) do rocka („Hair”)”. Na pierwszym dysku znalazło się kilka fragmentów instrumentalnych, wszak musical to nie tylko śpiew, ale także taniec. Kolekcję otwiera uwertura z „Kandyda” Leonarda Bernsteina – najczęściej wykonywany utwór amerykańskiego kompozytora. Standard „Ol’ Man River” z przełomowego musicalu „Show Boat” (1927) to amerykańska muzyka w pigułce: gospel, blues, jazz.  Spektakl „42 Street” przypomina „złote lata” Broadwayu, natomiast „Grease” jest sentymentalną wycieczką do pierwszej dekady rock’n’rolla. Musical nowoczesny nie unika tematów trudnych („Cabaret”), sięga po literaturę (tworzywem „My Fair Lady” jest dramat G.B. Shawa „Pigmalion”), a nawet po legendy europejskiego średniowiecza („Camelot”). Sensacją był spektakl Andrew Lloyda Webbera „Jesus Christ Superstar” (1971) oparty na… Ewangelii. Prezentujemy dwie arie: Marii Magdaleny i Jezusa. Wydarzeniem artystycznym o innym charakterze był musical Stephena Sondheima „Sunday In The Park With George” – pierwszy akt tego przedstawienia rozgrywał się w obrazie George’a Seurata „Niedzielne popołudnie na wyspie Grande Jatte”.  Drugi dysk otwiera demoniczne preludium z musicalu „Sweeney Todd”, nazywanego też „czarną operą”. Ale jego twórca, Stephen Sondheim, z równą swobodą komponuje utwory o ponadczasowym pięknie, jak jego znana pieśń „Send In The Clowns”. Musicale „Chicago” i „Dreamgirls” emanują nieposkromioną energią, podobnie jak utwór „Be Italian” z „Nine”. Hipisowski „Hair” dokonał w latach 60. przełomu poruszając tematykę antywojenną i propagując ideologię kontestacji. Lekcją tolerancji było przedstawienie „La Cage Aux Follies”, eksplozją teatralnego szaleństwa okazał się musical Mela Brooksa „Producenci”, oparty na jego filmie o tym samym tytule. Wśród wykonawców znajdziemy w naszej kolekcji legendarnych artystów, często z premierowych obsad, jak Topol (filmowy Mleczarz ze „Skrzypka na dachu”), Mary Martin, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters i Mandy Patinkin (gwiazdy Broadwayu), a także wybitnych wykonawców spoza musicalowej sceny, jak Ute Lemper czy Natasha Richardson.   This recording unites familiar works (Handel, Telemann, J. F. Fasch) with rarities recovered from their archival sleep of centuries. The Thieme sonata is one of the first pieces ever written for solo trumpet(s); this and all the other pieces presented here display the level of virtuosity attained by the courtly trumpet repertoire of the Baroque period. It is well known that the Baroque trumpet, due to its emblematic significance, occupied a special position in the hierarchy of musical instruments. It was the symbol of celestial and earthly power. For this reason, trumpet literature of that time is nearly always splendid and joyful; sad emotions were not its domain. Within these boundaries there was nevertheless a broad gamut of expressive possibilities, from the chamber-music intimacy of the Telemann concerto and the gallant finesse of C. F. C. Fasch’s triple concerto to the cosmopolitan elegance of the Handel suite and the festive opulence of Endler’s sinfonia. On this recording, works have been assembled to demonstrate the musical splendour of German courts. An apparent exception is the Handel suite, but the connection of the house of Hanover with the British crown and Handel’s own origins justify this work’s acceptance into the German cultural tradition, even despite its French style.
