Anakoluth, Mark Polscher couples the strangeness of the electronic world of sound with the familiarity of natural and human sounds, manufacturing and civilization noises, as well as the sounds of various materials, everyday objects, and traditional musical instruments. In that he processes recordings of concrete sounds, sometimes beyond all recognition, and creates pure electronic sounds out of them, he forms all possible transitions between extreme alienation and natural reproduction. In this field of tension of “concrete” sonorities and “abstract” everyday sounds, the electronic sounds neutralize the known context of the concrete events, and vice versa: the natural material sometimes auratically and associatively charges the electronic sounds to such an extent that they too begin to speak. The anacoluthic formal principle in Polscher’s sound and aural story is based on the fact that at different phases in his life every human being moves in changing social, cultural, and musical contexts. For this reason, Anakoluth becomes a mirror and barometer of public opinion of audible life at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The 15th and 16th centuries were the golden age of Flemish polyphony. Dufay, Josquin, Isaac and many others were among the composers most celebrated in the major courts of Europe. In terms of both their methods and their musical output, these composers transmitted a style characterised by complex counterpoint and a remarkable sense of musical architecture. Ludwig Senfl had the highest regard for these qualities. Under the influence of his teacher Heinrich Isaac, he made the Flemish idiom his own, while adding to it obvious personal touches.Making the present selection has brought home to us what a privilege it is to be able to choose from an output of such quality – yet how frustrating it is to have to do so! We have done no more than lift one small corner of the veil beneath which Senfl’s masterly oeuvre lies hidden. Nearly 500 years after his death, a large part of his output remains consigned to musical history, completely unknown to both music-lovers and performers. We hope that this recording will demonstrate how unjustly Senfl’s reputation has been obscured by that of his teacher Isaac; for us, his music has been a revelation and a source of huge musical pleasure.

The first sonatas composed at the beginning of the seventeenth century reflect the fundamental change that has taken place in vocal music around 1700. Starting out from the Florentine Camerata, the new style of recitar cantando developed, and laid down the foundation for the emergence of opera and madrigal. The appearance of an autonomous instrumental music, which was to become typical in the seventeenth century and which is relatively independent of the vocal models, is one of the consequences of this musical revolution.Two representatives of this generation of composers are Giovanni Battista Fontana and Giovanni Battista Buonamente, and it is no coincidence that both were violinists. The autonomy of the instrumental music goes hand in hand with the growing importance of the violin, which gradually replaced the cornett in sacred music. This music is at the crossroads of all the influences and all the usual musical forms of the time. One can hear recitatives and arias, as well as sections reminiscent of organ toccatas.Accordingly William Dongois and his ensemble Le Concert Brisé have entrusted the melodic parts in their exciting recording of sonatas and dance movements by Fontana and Buonamente to violin and cornett, and it is fascinating to hear how this music characterises both echoes of the vocal music as well as typically instrumental diminutions and virtuosic passages.
