MEDICINE OF THE SOUL   Music and poetry have been used since the earliest known times as a therapeutic ritual to heal both the soul and the body. They have also been used for meditation, and in particular, as a means to mediate with the divine. There is no culture that does not consider music and musical instruments as essential for civilization to progress. Since Pythagoras and the Pre-Socratic philosophers, musical scales and their relationship to cosmic harmony have been thought to have an effect on the harmony of both the bodily humors and the human organs. Music’s mathematical base and its harmonic proportion re-establish the balance of whatever is distorted, or sick. In the past, music was considered to be the language of feelings. Love was a disease of the soul, a kind of insanity, and in the past doctors used music to treat it.   What role does music play in our lives? To what depths does it go to get so much sap from such mysterious roots? The oriental mystic brotherhoods, who have inherited classical wisdom, say: “Music filters into the body through the ears just as blood flows through our veins, it purifies the blood, excites the soul, calms the spirit, relaxes the limbs and facilitates their movement”.   The rhapsode-musician is the mender who stitches and repairs broken things, “he sews the remnants of the past” and threads them together with his melodies and songs. The performer is inseparable from music and his sensitivity is directly linked to the effect achieved. He is not a mere translator or physician giving medicine. Like a goldsmith, he shares in music's spirit and uses its power to recover the origins that inspired it. Music extracts the essence of emotion from one's being.   I have based this selection of music on the moving and balsamic effect I now experience when listening to it. They are all versions, or extracts, that share the Pneuma label’s musical values (word that means Spirit). This recording is dedicated to those for whom music is not only an art to enjoy, but also an “effusion of the soul”. Eduardo Paniagua.

The first recording by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for BIS centred on Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, a work which stands squarely on the threshold between Classicism and Romanticism. Nézet-Séguin’s interpretation brilliantly demonstrated this ambivalence, as the reviewer in CD Review on BBC Radio 3 remarked: ‘A Fantastic Symphony that relishes in the transparency and the delicacy of Berlioz's scoring while remaining true to its vivid imagination and dramatic punch’. On the follow-up to that exciting release is another work that straddles a musical divide, namely Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs. Composed in 1948, these late blooms of an unabashed Romanticism stood in the midst of a musical landscape which featured the twelve-tone serialism of the Darmstadt School, John Cage’s prepared piano and the first examples of musique concrète. In accordance with Strauss’s wish, it was the dramatic soprano Kirsten Flagstad who first performed the songs, but they also became closely associated with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. On the present recording, it is Dorothea Röschmann, one of today’s foremost Mozart sopranos who lends her voice to what is often regarded as an expression of the composer’s acceptance of death’s inevitability, at the age of eighty-four. We meet Strauss in a completely different mood in the disc’s opening work – the large-scale symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) composed fifty years before the songs. By casting himself in the role of the Hero, Strauss managed to provoke generations of music-lovers for years to come. A study of aggressive egotism, the work has been called, as well as the most conceited piece of music ever written. But it is also widely regarded as one of the most brilliant, and virtuosic, orchestral scores in the history of music, displaying the possibilities of a large symphony orchestra to the fullest.

Sam zaś Jack White zaangażowany został do występu w filmie "Cold Mountain" Anthony'ego Minghelli piosenki. White Stripes z Detroit - miasta Iggy'ego Popa i MC5 - zwrócili na siebie szerszą uwagę w 2000 r. drugim albumem "De Stijl", nawiązującym z tytułu i wizualnie do awangardowego nurtu w sztuce, jaki pojawił się pod koniec I wojny światowej w Holandii. Zadziwiło mistrzostwo, z jakim Jack i Meg łączyli blues, punk rock i muzykę pop. The Chantilly codex is the most sumptuous of the manuscripts transmitting the fascinating polyphonic songs of the late fourteenth-century France in a style known as the “ars subtilior”, the “more subtle art.” In the songs of this period, composers exerted themselves to express ever more complex rhythms, inventing new notational symbols to express them. The expression of the musical rhythm through notation was such a hot-button issue that a number of songs in the manuscript actually take it on as a topic, becoming self-referential essays about musical composition. In addition, the composers of this music worked in the great courts of Europe, and politics and political events invariably made their way into the song repertory.

Mayr Johann Simon was born in Mendorf near Altmannstein, Landkreis Eichstätt, Bavaria, and studied theology at the University of Ingolstadt, continuing his studies in Italy from 1787. He was closely associated with the Bavarian Illuminati of Adam Weishaupt while a student in Ingolstadt, and the ideals of the French Enlightenment were a strong influence on his philosophy as a musician as corroborated by his famed Zibaldone or "Notebooks" compiled toward the end of his career.Shortly thereafter, he took music lessons with Carlo Lenzi, and later with Ferdinando Bertoni. He moved to Bergamo in 1802 and was appointed maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Bergamo, succeeding his old teacher Lenzi. He held the post until his death, and became a central figure in the city's musical life, organizing concerts and introducing Ludwig van Beethoven's music there. He was music teacher to Gaetano Donizetti. By the end of his life, he was blind. He died in Bergamo and is buried in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore there, just in front of the tomb of his famous pupil.Mayr's astonishing list of works, among which are almost seventy operas, are rarely performed today.
